On June 26th to 28th, 2024, with support from Novartis, IAPB joined forces with Orbis International Zambia to hold a three-day training on advocacy for Eye Health. The training targeted program managers from eye health NGOs working in Zambia: Orbis International, Lions Aid, CBM, Sightsavers, Operation Eyesight Universal, Onsight, Vision Action and Vision Spring. This training marked a significant progress towards enhancing eye health advocacy in Zambia.

Held at the Urban Hotel, Woodlands in Lusaka, Zambia, the training gathered 17 participants from the seven eye health NGOs and a representative from the Lusaka Eye Hospital. The primary goal of the training was to build and strengthen the capacity of eye health program managers to understand the concept of advocacy and action to enable them to engage with decision makers and those responsible on eye health priorities.

The three-day training not only empowered the participants with valuable skills and knowledge but also fostered a sense of collaboration among the various eye health NGOs in Zambia. By working together and sharing insights, these organizations will more effectively advocate for eye health and bring about meaningful change.

As the Zambia National Advocacy Network moves forward, the strategies and tools developed during this training will play a crucial role in guiding their efforts. With a united front and a clear plan, the eye health community in Zambia is well-equipped to tackle the challenges identified in the recently launched National eye health strategy and make significant strides in improving eye health for all.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Orbis International, IAPB, and Novartis, along with the participation of dedicated eye health NGOs, has set a strong foundation for advancing eye health advocacy in Zambia. The impact of this training will be felt for years to come as these organizations continue to champion the cause of eye health and work towards a future where everyone has access to the eye care they need.

“It was a pleasure facilitating the advocacy training for the Zambia advocacy network. I am proud that we not only equipped the participants with advocacy skills but also initiated the development of an eye health advocacy strategy that will go a long way in shaping and changing the eye landscape in Zambia. Keep up the great work IAPB!” Beatrice Theuri, The Inclusive Eye Health Advocacy Manager at CBM and Facilitator of the Advocacy Training.
