Global Productivity Losses Due to Avoidable Sight Loss
(Opens in a new window) New research released on World Sight Day 2023 reveals the global league table of countries with the biggest potential economic boost from better eye care. The study, conducted by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and Prof. Kevin Frick from Johns Hopkins, Van C. Lansingh and Kristen Eckert calculated the productivity costs of avoidable sight loss among people over 50. Countries with some of the biggest potential productivity gains include China ($96 billion), United States ($50 billion), India ($27 billion), Japan ($20 billion) and the United Kingdom ($12 billion).Magnitude of global vision loss

(Opens in a new window) On World Sight Day 2022, the WHO launched the Report of the 2030 Targets on Effective Coverage of Eye Care, based on two publications in The Lancet Global Health.These publications present the first set of reference estimates of effective refractive error coverage and effective cataract surgical coverage – the two new ambitious global targets for 2030.
