Empowering people to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage and make informed decisions about their diabetes management and care can have a direct impact on their health outcomes. The discussion aims to put forward the best practice strategies and systems to activate and engage people with diabetes to look after their eyes and prevent possible vision loss and other associated risks.
Aim: The session aims to share successes and lessons learnt in consumer, client, and patient empowerment strategies within and outside eye care sector in the region.
Format: Moderator-led discussion with panel followed by Q & A with the audience.
Talking Points:
Amanda Davis is the Chair of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in the Western Pacific region. She currently holds the position of Director of Strategic Initiatives with The Fred Hollows Foundation and is a Director of PNG Eyecare. Within IAPB, she also holds positions of Co-chair of the Refractive Error Working Group and member of the steering committee for the Refractive Error Coalition.
Dr Audrey Aumua is the Chief Executive of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ which has a mission to end avoidable blindness and vision impairment in the Pacific. Dr Aumua was the Deputy Director General at The Pacific Community’s (SPC) Suva office. She has extensive experience in research, policy development and management in the health and education sectors in New Zealand and Australia and has held sustainable development leadership roles across the Pacific.
Nor Fariza Ngah is an ophthalmologist with subspeciality training in medical retina and uveitis. She helped established medial retina and uveitis services at the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. She continues to train fellows, post-graduates and optometrists in her field. She is an active researcher with interests in diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retina hereditary disease and uveitis.
Sangchul Yoon is a professor at College of Medicine, Yonsei University. He is an ophthalmologist, and has served as Vice Director of the Center for Global Development at Yonsei University Health System to improve the health status of people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). He is also a public health expert connecting the laboratory and the field in generating health evidence. His research interests have been focused on innovative technology to improve eye health access and efficiencies, such as digital health and artificial intelligence.
