Join a powerful, unprecedented alliance for better eye health for all.
Join IAPBThe Eye Care Working Group of Laos recently convened in Vientiane, Laos for a national workshop. This event brought together 19 key persons, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, ophthalmology expert groups, IAPB members, and WHO, marking another meaningful step forward in our collective efforts.
The workshop began with an update and review of the progress of the National Strategic Plan for Eye Health 2021-2025. We reviewed what was achieved so far, reflecting on Laos’ accomplishments, working together with IAPB members, despite encountering various challenges. While we took a moment to celebrate our achievements, there was a shared acknowledgement that there is more to be done. As we enter the fourth year of this strategy, it has become clearer that our collaborative approaches are needed.
Another highlight of the day was the successful engagement of WHO alongside the Ministry of Health. Having these two pivotal organizations underscored the importance of international and national cooperation in addressing eye heath challenges in Laos. The presence of WHO representative provided potential support and resources available that could enhance our capacity to achieve the goals.
Looking ahead, the group’s focus remains on the objectives of the strategy. One of the critical outcomes of the workshop was the collaborative effort toward prioritization that aligns with national needs and global practices, thereby paving the way for more targeted and effective approaches. During spirited discussions, the group identified key areas needing attention and action, such as ESCAT, reviewing and adding new indicators for the next strategy, appointing a national coordinator, and improving cataract quality information and dissemination. Using SMART objectives, the group will focus on working together to support the strategy.
This workshop ended with the groundwork laid for developing a roadmap. IAPB will convene the next meeting with refined Terms of References, including priorities and roles, to guide our efforts in the coming months. Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward, united in our mission to make a difference.
