Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Eye Hospital and Training Institute

The Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Eye Hospital and Training Institute (SFMEHTI) in Gopalganj stands as a cornerstone of eye care in Bangladesh, particularly for those outside the capital city of Dhaka. As the sole government-run specialized eye hospital in the country, it serves patients from diverse regions, with a significant focus on the southern areas.

Each day, the outpatient department sees over 1000 individuals seeking prescriptions and treatment, while more than 600 patients undergo surgeries monthly. The hospital comprises an outpatient department, inpatient department, and an emergency department, supported by eight operational rooms within a modern operating theater complex. Additionally, the hospital boasts a state-of-the-art laboratory facility.

SFMEHTI operates as the flagship center for national eye care under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Leveraging telemedicine, ophthalmologists extend their services to remote areas, ensuring broader access to quality eye care.

Moreover, the institute serves as the primary research hub for ophthalmic studies in Bangladesh, designated as the 1st Regional Research Center by the Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC). Through regular workshops, it fosters human resource development in research methodology, particularly in the southern regions. Additionally, it collaborates with BMRC to conduct vital research projects.

SFMEHTI also plays a pivotal role in education, offering courses such as the Mid-Level Ophthalmic Assistant Course (MLOP) and Postgraduate Diploma programs, further contributing to the development of skilled professionals in eye care.
