On the 27th of February, IAPB Africa convened the Political & Institutional Engagement (PIE) Sub-Saharan Africa Committee to discuss critical steps toward championing and advancing eye health in the region. This meeting, chaired by the regional chair for Sub-Saharan Africa, Dr. Aaron Magava, was an essential step in preparing for the Global Summit for Eye Health in 2026, ensuring Africa’s strong participation and commitment to the 2030 In Sight strategy.

Why the PIE Group Matters for Africa

The PIE group is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that at least 50 countries across WHO regions actively engage in the Global Summit.

For Africa, where equity in healthcare remains a challenge, the PIE group serves as a vital mechanism to engage governments, secure commitments, and embed eye health policies into national development plans.

Key Discussions and Next Steps

The meeting covered several key agenda items, including:
🔹 Roadmap to the Summit – Outlining key milestones, including events such as the 2030 IN SIGHT LIVE in Nepal, the World Health Assembly, and the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on NCDs that will be leveraged to build momentum and secure commitments.

  • The group considered regional specific events and activities that could be opportunities for engagements such as:
  • The African Union meeting
  • Bilateral donors e.g., UNICEF
  • Link to ongoing initiatives e.g the SDG monitoring.

🔹 PIE Terms of Reference & Structure – Ensuring clear governance and accountability within the committee.

The committee members to participate in monthly meetings.

🔹 Country & Institutional Engagement – Strengthening relationships with decision-makers and influencers to push for policy changes.
The committee to identify champion countries and champions; influencers and decision makers within countries.

With the 2026 Global Summit on the horizon, now is the time to mobilize, strategize, and act.

‘The Global Summit on Eye Health is about turning words on paper to action for people – from paper to people.’ Amb. Aubrey Webson, Chair of UN Friends of Vision.
