Join a powerful, unprecedented alliance for better eye health for all.
Join IAPBMomentum is growing across Europe to make eye health a public health and development priority. From high-level political engagement to community-driven initiatives, efforts are underway to ensure eye care is integrated into national and regional health strategies.
A major step forward has been the establishment of the European Advocacy Network, bringing together key stakeholders to highlight the economic, social, and health benefits of prioritising vision care. Discussions are also progressing on forming a ‘Friends of Vision’ group in Europe, with the aim of securing long-term political commitment from policymakers across EU institutions and Member States.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Vision loss affects millions across Europe, yet it is often overlooked as a policy priority. Ageing populations, rising cases of myopia in children, and economic losses due to uncorrected vision impairment highlight the urgent need for action. However, fragmented eye care services, limited data collection, and a misconception that eye health is already ‘solved’ continue to slow progress.
Advocacy efforts are making an impact. Strategic engagement at key events, from Euretina to dedicated advocacy meetings in Brussels and Amsterdam, has helped push for policy change. The European Advocacy Network Strategy Meeting in December 2024 provided a crucial moment to assess progress and set priorities for the year ahead.
Members of the European Parliament have an important role to play, from securing funding for vision research to championing school and workplace eye care initiatives. With the 2026 Global Summit on Eye Health on the horizon, Europe has an opportunity to take a leading role in shaping the future of global vision care.
By continuing to build political will, strengthen partnerships, and drive meaningful action, we can ensure eye health remains firmly on the agenda. The progress made in 2024 lays the foundation for a future where access to quality eye care is a reality for all.
