Join IAPBThe Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) is a well-established, population-based eye health survey designed to assess the prevalence and causes of vision impairment and blindness among individuals aged 50 years and older. This age group is targeted because it accounts for approximately 80% of all blindness globally. RAAB provides essential data that aids in planning and monitoring eye care services, ensuring that interventions are both effective and efficient. https://raab.world
In Africa, the importance of data-driven decision-making in eye health has led to the implementation of RAAB surveys in several countries over the past five years. For instance, in between years 2023 to 2024, sub-national RAAB7 surveys were conducted in the Nord region of Benin, Liberia, Kenya and Zambia among other countries in the region. These surveys have been instrumental in identifying the prevalence and causes of vision impairment, thereby guiding health authorities in these countries to develop targeted interventions and allocate resources more effectively.
“The considerable increase in RAAB survey coverage in Africa over the last 5 years has generated a powerful resource. This data illuminates the current state of eye health, serves as a critical tool for directing targeted interventions and as a reference point for evaluating the impact of our collective efforts in the future.” Jude Stern- Director of Knowledge Management.
