Eye Health Hero: Azyadeh Camacho Ordonez

It’s a pleasure for me to be writing to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in behalf of the hospital I represent, and to be nominating Dr. Azyadeh Camacho Ordonez for this year award. Dr. Camacho joined our hospital in 2014; during her residency and fellowship she was recognized for being able to achieve good results between teaching, patient eye care and research. Overall, she is a capable, motivated, and hard-working doctor.

“The eyes are essential organs to our body. I like to examine patients with eye diseases, diagnose them, and provide an adequate and up-to-date treatment. A way for me to contribute to improving the eye health of Mexicans has been attending campaigns and traveling to the poorest areas of my country. Moreover, I like to contribute in knowledge generation. I have a project to research about potential eye biomarkers to help in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson´s disease.”

She has joined the campaigns pointed to the most vulnerable sectors of the Mexican population to eliminate avoidable blindness. Even in the most remote and poor areas, she shows enthusiasm to join, she is productive and reliable. Her spirit for helping the others and improve the eye health of the people is contagious. Besides that, she has discovered the potential of transmitting the knowledge to the young generation of trainees, she became a junior attending physician two years ago. Her colleagues and students show admiration for the passion that she puts in her work and constant motivation to improve the eye care prevention, management and avoidable blindness in the Mexican population.

She is always looking to improve her skills. Last year, she received a 3-month Fellowship from the International Ophthalmologist Foundation to acquire new skills at the Ophthalmology Department at the University Hospital in Freiburg, Germany. Since, she has transmitted the skills acquired there in the daily practice. Furthermore, she has an active role in research, even with limited resources, she has designed several clinical trials. She is an outstanding young ophthalmologist. Therefore, I fully-heartedly nomination in the Future Leaders Category.
