In the lead up to World Diabetes Day, 2020 Australian of the Year and ophthalmologist, Dr James Muecke AM will present a confronting keynote presentation – the story of Neil Hansell, a man who woke one morning blind in both eyes due to neglect of his diabetes. Dr Muecke discusses why type 2 diabetes is a growing worldwide epidemic and explores a number of strategies to curb the toxic impact of sugar on our health and on our world.

Panel Discussion to follow will address the links between the sugar epidemic, the COVID-19 pandemic and the global gaps where tackling Diabetic Retinopathy is concerned.

Professor of the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Central University of Kerala. His research interests are in chronic non-communicable diseases and their risk factors. He is a member of advisory groups including, National Institute of Nutrition Hyderabad, Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai and the Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi.
