On October 3rd, Samoa celebrated World Sight Day with a vibrant gathering at Falefitu Primary School, where the community came together to shine a spotlight on the importance of eye health for children. Government representatives, health professionals, parents, teachers, and hundreds of students were gathered.
The event was organized by the Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, in collaboration with the Samoa Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, they focused on raising awareness of the impact that clear vision has on children’s lives.

In his address, Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio emphasized: “Our children are the future of our Nation, and their wellbeing is paramount. A child’s ability to see clearly is essential for their education, development, and overall quality of life.” He also highlighted the role that cooperative initiatives play in Samoa’s efforts to ensure that eye care services are accessible to all, especially the younger generation, underscoring Samoa’s commitment to safeguarding children’s eye health as creating a foundation for their learning and growth.

Students were invited to share their thoughts on eye health. One student captured the spirit of the day, saying, “Love your eyes because, without good vision, it is very difficult to achieve my goals and complete my education.” His words served as a powerful message, reminding us of the link between vision and the potential for academic and personal success. The event also featured activities led by Samoa’s eye health team, who carried out and eye health screenings for children and delivered educational sessions on eye care.

Samoa’s celebration of World Sight Day was a testament to the country’s strong community commitment and collective effort toward children’t eye health. By ensuring access to essential eye care, Samoa is investing in a brighter future. This dedication is especially meaningful as Samoa was preparin to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 on October 21st-26th. Through these collaborative efforts, Samoa continues to set an inspiring example of how unity and partnership can shape better eye health for all.
