The Community Eye Health Institute Courses for 2023

The Community Eye Health Institute (CEHI) was established in 2008 with the broad aim to build capacity in public eye health services in sub-Saharan Africa. Through education and training, programme development and research, CEHI aims to promote the application of the principles and techniques of advocacy, strategic leadership and programme management to improve the performance of district, provincial and national prevention of blindness programmes.

The CEHI training centre is situated within the premises of Groote Schuur Hospital, which is adjacent to the Health Sciences Faculty of the University of Cape Town.

The CEHI has a variety of education and training programmes scheduled for 2023 directed at organisations and individuals (e.g. clinicians, managers and support staff) working in prevention of blindness programmes in developing countries.

The following schedule of courses is offered in 2023:

Programme Directed At Provisional dates
Postgraduate Diploma in Community Eye Health  People working in prevention of blindness programmes in sub-Saharan Africa. These may include national eye care coordinators, district, provincial or national eye care programme managers, & clinical professionals working in eye care programmes (ophthalmologists, ophthalmic medical officers, ophthalmic clinical officers, optometrists, ophthalmic medical assistants, & ophthalmic nurses). 13 February – 01 December 2023
Strengthening Public Eye Health (SPHS) Training

 

Five (5) certificate courses designed to provide training in the management of district eye care programmes. Suitable for national eye care coordinators & district eye care programme managers.  This is offered in both online and contact mode. Click here to download the SPHS course summary.

Community eye health, starting 20 February

Master of Public Health (Community Eye Health track) People working in prevention of blindness programmes in sub-Saharan Africa. These may include national eye care coordinators, district, provincial or national eye care programme managers, & clinical professionals working in eye care programmes (ophthalmologists, ophthalmic medical officers, ophthalmic clinical officers, optometrists, ophthalmic medical assistants, & ophthalmic nurses). Note: this is a residential programme! Semester 1:

CEH modules 1 and 2 starts in February and ends in June.

Simulation Ophthalmic Surgical training The training in introduction to basic microsurgical techniques, manual small incision and phaco-emulsification cataract surgery, as well as trabeculectomy are intended for ophthalmologists, ophthalmology registrars and eye surgeons from lower and middle income countries, for competency training or up-skilling in the relevant surgical technique. Senior ophthalmic surgeons can also be trained as Trainer of Trainees  The following courses are offered:

Manual small incision cataract surgery

Phacoemulsification cataract surgery

Trabeculectomy

Gonioscopy-assisted trabeculectomy

Basic microsurgical techniques

 Community eye health short courses Community eye health is not a clinical discipline, but is aimed at understanding and applying the public health principles of needs analysis, planning and service design and development for the purpose of implementing successful district-wide eye care services to address the problem of avoidable blindness, especially in poor communities.  The course is suitable for eye care professionals, programme managers and coordinators and public health workers intent on working in eye care.

 

This short, one-week course is offered in contact format in the week starting 20 February 2023, and is aimed at providing participants comprehensive insight in the principles and techniques of community eye health.
